Steve Clayton

Chief Financial Officer

Steve is responsible for Macmillan’s finance, information governance, internal audit, legal, procurement and category management, risk, governance and compliance, and workplace functions.

Steve’s strategy

Steve’s ambition is to ensure that Macmillan’s income is maximised, and expenditure is focused on the effective provision of services to people living with and affected by cancer.

He is also responsible for helping to protect Macmillan’s reputation through robust governance, risk and compliance and assurance.

Career and credentials

Steve joined Macmillan as Chief Financial Officer in April 2019 and has significant international, cross-functional, board (including trustee) experience. The majority of his career has been in IT Software and Services after spending the early part of his career in the Manufacturing and Retail sectors.

Steve enjoys working at the heart of the business as a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and senior leadership team and has a passion for delivering results, transforming businesses and developing high performing teams.

He has expertise in business strategy, mergers and acquisitions, managing complex customer projects and pension schemes, governance & assurance and business transformation. In addition to successfully influencing strategic direction, he brings a strong operational focus to deliver business outcomes, improve financial results and liquidity.

The non-work stuff

Steve lives in central London and has a passion for Stoke City, long-distance cycling and live music. He enjoys visiting his two daughters and two sons, who live around the UK.

He’s an active charity fundraiser and volunteer participating in events that have supported Macmillan Cancer Support, The Felix Project, The Prince’s Trust, Business in the Community, Shelter and Action for Children. He has undertaken several multiday cycling challenges in Europe – in 2020 he raised over £8,500 for Macmillan by cycling 212 miles from Albert Embankment to our office in Shipley in a single day.
