Our commitment to our supporters

You may have seen coverage in the media about how Macmillan has used supporter information.

We want you to know how much we value our supporters.

We are run entirely on donations and don’t receive any government funding. Without supporters like you, we simply couldn’t provide our vital services to people living with cancer across the UK.

We are learning and improving how we work

The Information Commissioner’s Office has found that Macmillan was not clear enough with supporters about how we use your details.

We acted according to our understanding of sector guidance at the time and have always applied high standards to our work. This includes taking great care in the way we manage details of anyone who donated money to our cause.

We take the ICO’s findings very seriously and we want to apologise for the mistake we have made.

We promise to learn from this and we have already made many important changes to the way we work. We are completely reviewing how we talk to you about the ways we use your information. We want you to feel absolutely sure that we will respect your privacy and preferences.

Our promise to you

As a valued supporter, you should feel absolutely sure that we will respect your privacy and preferences. We promise that:

  • We’ll keep your personal details safe and secure and never sell or swap them
  • We’ll use your details in the way you have agreed to and only tell you about things we think you may be interested in
  • We’ll make sure our fundraising is legal and follows best practice
  • If things ever do go wrong, we’ll listen, apologise, act and learn

Please read our full Supporter Promise for our commitment to being open and transparent with everyone who gives us money.

Thank you

Thank you for your ongoing support. You have helped Macmillan to reach millions of people affected by cancer. We couldn’t do it without you.
