Cheer at our Challenge Events
Fancy taking on a fun and inspiring new volunteer role in 2016? Then sign yourself up as a Challenge Events cheerer. It’s something absolutely anyone can do, you can drop into an event really easily, and your encouragement can make all the difference to those running, swimming or cycling for Macmillan.
Our cheerers are the heart and soul of Team Macmillan (which is made up of all the amazing people who are involved in our fundraising events) and the loudest, proudest supporters around. Whether they’re making some noise, marshalling or handing out medals, these inspiring volunteers play a crucial role in every action-packed event. Their enthusiasm and encouragement send our fantastic fundraisers sailing past the finish line, and in turn help us to raise lots of desperately-needed funds.
One person who understands how rewarding this role can be is Gordon (pictured above). Speaking to Volunteer News, he says, ‘I began volunteering for Macmillan after I lost my brother-in-law to cancer. I’d just retired, I wanted to stay active and I felt moved to do something, so I decided to do it for Macmillan.’
Gordon has been a cheerer at the Norwich Half Marathon every year since it began in 1985 and says there are many different ways for volunteers to get involved.
‘As well as cheering on the runners at the cheer points, sometimes I also hand out drinks to them at the water stations, help out behind the scenes, or organise the other volunteers. There are lots of different roles for cheerers, and I’ve had a go at them all. The thing I enjoy the most is hearing people’s stories – that encourages you all the more. I’ve made lots of friends through the Half Marathon and the camaraderie is wonderful.’
With 170 Challenge Events set to take place nationwide this year, there’s bound to be one near you. Be the power behind our participants and sign up as a cheerer today >
