Radiotherapy

Internal radiotherapy explained

Different methods of internal radiotherapy can be used to treat some cancers.

  • What is internal radiotherapy?

Internal radiotherapy is when treatment is given by placing radioactive material inside the body.

  • Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy treats cancer by placing a high dose of radiation directly inside or near to the tumour.

  • Radioisotopes

Radioisotope therapy targets cancer cells with a radioactive liquid.

  • Selective internal radiotherapy (SIRT)

Selective internal radiation therapy uses tiny radioactive beads to treat liver tumours that can’t be removed by surgery.
