Mario on work and cancer

Mario lost his business following his diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

He turned to Macmillan for financial help, and started volunteering to help give his life some focus.

Mario's story

Before I was diagnosed with cancer I was running an Italian restaurant in town. But I was forced to give up because of my treatment and its side effects. When I checked my insurance, I found out that it only insured me for accidents. This meant that because I couldn't work and wasn't insured, I ended up losing my home and my restaurant. My wife was divorcing me, my whole life was upside down.

I lost my income and I didn't know what I was going to do, it was very scary. There was a point when I could've become homeless. I didn't know where the money was going to come from to buy things for basic living. But with the help of Pat and a Macmillan Grant, some of that worry was taken away.

After losing my home and not being able to go back into the restaurant business, volunteering for Macmillan is the one thing that’s helped me rebuild my life again. I am as passionate about Macmillan as I was about my career running a restaurant and hope I’ll have the chance to work for them in the future.
