Although Claire’s tumour is still there, it’s much smaller now and she’s even been able to return to her work. Nowadays Claire tries to live life to the full and doesn’t take anything for granted.

She feels this is partly thanks to her discovery of complementary therapies, such as reiki and meditation.

Claire's story

One of my husband Tony’s friend’s wives, was a holistic specialist. I’d never met her before but she phoned up and said, 'I’d like to come and give you a treatment.' I didn’t really know anything about it then. She said, 'Claire, I think you’d be a good person to do reiki.' I felt really good when she did that. She came every week for ages and I wasn’t paying her – she was doing it completely voluntarily.

One of the first things they teach you is the five reiki principles. You start off by saying, 'Just for today I will let go of anger. Just for today I will let go of worry. Just for today I will give thanks for every blessing.' And it really has helped me.

You’re telling yourself good things all the time and you can’t not be positive when you do that kind of stuff because you’re telling yourself good things all the time. I got into meditation too. I have a quiet time every single day, and I believe everybody should. 20 minutes in the morning, 20 minutes at night – it just helps.

The tumour’s tiny now – it was massive before. So all I can do is make the most of every minute of every day, and hope that it carries on. It’s totally changed the way I think about life. I was always positive, I was always a happy, cheerful person. But now I try not to take anything for granted. And I try to be grateful to be able to breathe, to be able to do everything that I can do. It’s a very strange thing to say but I almost feel like it’s made me into a better person. Even the boys say, 'Mum, you’re so much calmer now.' So hopefully that can continue.
