The image shows a cross-section of a person’s head. The person is facing to the left. Behind the nose is a space called the nasal cavity. A layer of bone forms the roof of the nasal cavity. The floor of the nasal cavity is a layer of bone and tissue that also forms the roof of the mouth. In the mouth there are two rows of teeth and the tongue. The back of the nasal cavity and mouth open up into a space at the top of the throat. The top of this space, behind the nasal cavity, is called the nasopharynx. The lower area of this space, behind the mouth, is called the oropharynx.
