The diagram shows examples of a T1 a T2 and a T3 tumour.

It is of a cross section of the oesophagus so we can see the four layers that make it up. Surrounding the inner hollow tube that food goes through there is an inner layer called the mucosa. The next layer is called the submucosa. Surrounding this is a muscle layer called the muscularis. The final outer layer is called the adventitia.

A tumour that is growing in the mucosa and into the submucosa is labelled T1.

A tumour that has grown through the mucosa and submucosa into the muscle layer is labelled T2.

A tumour that has grown through all the layers of the oesophagus into the outer layer called the adventitia is labelled T3.
