Cone biopsy labelled - image description

The diagram shows the womb and the cervix (which is the lower part of the womb). Below the cervix is the very top of the vagina. Shaded areas indicate the outside part of the cervix, which is covered in squamous cells, the lining of the cervical canal (that leads into the womb), which is covered in columnar cells, and the area were these two types of cell meet, which is called the transformation zone. There are two dotted lines in an upside down V shape, one from each side of the vagina joining to a point in the middle of the cervical canal. These lines indicate the area to be removed, which includes the entire transformation zone.
