Carole's story

Never running out of steam.

Carole - Team Macmillan runner

Carole first started fundraising for Macmillan in 2006 when she completed the London Marathon. Hear about why she loves running and why Team Macmillan is the one for her.

Her hit list

Over the last seven years, Carole has raised a whopping £10,000 as a runner and cyclist for Team Macmillan. Here are all the events she's taken on:

  • Three London Marathons
  • The Chicago Marathon
  • Three Bath Half Marathons
  • Two Great South Runs
  • The Westonbirt 10km Trot
  • The Blenheim Triathlon
  • The London Triathlon
  • Malvern by Moonlight twice

Being different

Beginning these challenges at the age of 69, Carole does find she is a bit different from many of the other people taking part. Although it can be nerve-wracking taking on a challenge on your own, Carole say she 'loves the buzz of being part of something and knowing that in doing what she does, she is helping so many cancer patients.'

Carole told us about a time when she was in Chicago and she was advised to give up the run as the weather was so hot. However, she was stopped by an American lady who noticed she was doing the run for Macmillan. The lady told her that Macmillan had helped her father with his last wishes to return from the UK to the USA. ‘If anything was going to motivate me to keep going, this was it’.

Carole also spoke to us about Macmillan's support for her in her challenges. 'Whenever I get involved in any Macmillan challenge event, I feel a real sense of unity with everyone involved. We are doing something important together as a community. I've also met some really interesting people too.'

How it feels to participate

'The feeling you get from being on the finishing line – it's pride, the adrenalin, the whole gambit – it's indescribable really. I can’t tell you how great if feels, not just being involved on the day, but the training you have to do to get to that point where you can go out and do it. I actually love the build up to it just as much as the event. Macmillan does such an amazing job to support so many people, I love that can be part of that and really do my bit to help.'
