We answer your questions

How do I apply directly for a place?

Pre-registration for the 2014 Berlin Marathon is open from 30 September until 14 October 2013 at the Berlin Marathon website. Everyone who enters the pre-registration will be entered into a ballot drawn randomly on 30 October 2013.

If selected in this ballot you will receive a registration code that must be validated by 11 November 2013. If you are lucky enough to get a place in the Berlin Marathon public entry then we would love to have you running as part of Team Macmillan. Once your place is confirmed then you can register using our online form, or you can send us your details to and we'll send you out a Team Macmillan fundraising and training pack and a Macmillan technical running top.

We’ll support you every step of the way with a fundraising and training pack, regular newsletters, and support over the weekend. If you secure your own place there is no minimum sponsorship target, we simply ask you to raise as much as you can.

How do I apply for a Team Macmillan package?

There are two packages available in the BMW Berlin Marathon:

Package 1

Race entry only.

Registration fee: £30

Minimum sponsorship pledge: £1,000

Package 2

Race entry and three nights’ accommodation in central Berlin (Fri-Sun).

Registration fee: £tbc (payable to Sports Tours International)

Minimum sponsorship pledge: £1,200 (subject to costs being confirmed)

To apply for a package place in the Berlin Marathon please fill in our online application form. Once your form has been submitted we'll contact you within three working days to confirm whether your application was successful.

How much do I have to raise?

We ask all our Team Macmillan package runners to raise a minimum sponsorship amount. If you register for Package One you will have to raise a minimum of £1,000, plus pay a registration fee of £30.

If you registered for Package Two then you will need to raise a minimum £1,200 (you will also need to pay a £190 registration fee to Sports Tours International).

Please note that the deadline to enter new runners into the 2013 Berlin Marathon has now passed.

Please make all cheques for sponsorship payable to Macmillan Cancer Support. Of course, we'll give you all the encouragement and support you'll need to make sure you smash this target.

If you have secured your own place through the public entry system then we just ask you to raise as much as possible and we'll provide you with the same level of care and support that our Team Macmillan package runners receive.

What is your 'own place'?

Your 'own place' means that you entered the BMW Berlin Marathon through the public entry system. In order to check whether you have been accepted to the run, check that the registration fee has been taken from your account or check the online list of registered participants.

If you have secured a place, congratulations and we'd love for you to join Team Macmillan. Register using our online form, or send us your details to, or call 020 7840 4915 and let us know you would like to join the Team.

We will send you out a fundraising and training pack and you will receive the same level of support as someone on a Macmillan guaranteed place. In regards to sponsorship, we just ask you to raise as much as possible.

What is a Team Macmillan package place?

A Team Macmillan package place is a place that Macmillan has secured in the BMW Berlin Marathon. There are two packages available (see How do I apply for a Team Macmillan package, above).

Once we receive your application form and it has been successfully processed, you will be notified by Macmillan via phone call that your application was successful. From this point you will then receive a Team Macmillan fundraising pack and marathon training guide.

What kind of support will Macmillan give me if I join the team?

When you join Team Macmillan you will be supported throughout your entire Berlin Marathon experience. In addition to our initial fundraising and training pack, we will send you regular newsletters full of tips to help you prepare for the big day.

You will also be invited to our pre-race pasta party the night before the race, where you can stock up on carbs and meet your fellow team mates. And if that isn't enough, we will give you the loudest support possible throughout the race from our Team Macmillan cheer points.

Will Macmillan help me with my training?

Of course. When you sign up to run the BMW Berlin Marathon with Team Macmillan, we will provide you with a comprehensive marathon training guide which has programmes for beginner, intermediate and advanced runners. Plus, you will receive regular newsletters full of top training tips, including advice from our Team Macmillan patrons. We will also advise you of other useful sources of information and provide you with a guide to marathon day to help you prepare for your big race.

What are the details of the different Macmillan packages?

Please note that Package One includes race entry only – you will have to arrange your own travel and accommodation if you register for this package.

For Package Two, the package includes includes three nights stay in a 4-star Berlin hotel (either the Excelsior Hotel or the President Hotel, depending on availability) in central Berlin, and includes a buffet breakfast. Please visit Sports Tours for more details.

Single rooms and additional nights’ accommodation will be available but you will be required to pay a supplement. If you have friends or family members who would like to join you, please call Sports Tours International direct on 0161 703 8161 to book and for any further information.

Flights: Flights are not included in the packages available for the Berlin Marathon.

Can I extend my stay/take my family or friends etc?

If you are signed up on Package 2, our tour operator Sports Tours International can arrange for your package to be tailored to your requirements so that you can extend your stay in Berlin or take family or friends with you (availability permitting).

However, any additional costs incurred beyond our basic Team Macmillan package will need to be paid by you. Please visit the Sports Tours International for more details and their booking form, or call 0161 703 8161.

What happens if I get injured or I need to cancel?

If you or any of your team mates get injured whilst training, we recommend you contact your GP, physio, or specialist sports injury clinic. They will be able to advise you if you are fit enough to run.

If you do need to withdraw you will need to let the race organisers know as soon as possible. Please also let Macmillan know so that we can advise you about transferring your place.

If, for whatever reason, you find that you have to withdraw from the event you must notify us as soon as possible so we can cancel your travel bookings. Below are the cancellation fees per Sports Tours International, our tour operator.

84-56 days: 50% of package
55-28 days: 70% of package
27-15 days: 90% of package
Less than 15 days: 100% of package

How do I collect my race number?

All runners will be required to visit the Berlin VITAL Expo in the days preceding the event in order to pick up their race number and champion (timing) chip. There are no exceptions to this, so do ensure you allow time in your schedule to go. We will update the dates and opening times as soon as we receive them from the race organisers.

In order to register you will need your passport and event registration confirmation which you will receive in the month prior to the event.

Failure to register will mean that you will not be permitted to take part in the marathon itself. The Expo is open to the general public, though non-runners are charged entry.

If you own a Champion Chip, you can take this along to the Expo to be registered.

More details of the Expo and everything else you need to know will be contained in your Team Macmillan pre-race newsletters, and there is information on the Berlin Marathon website.

Where can I find more information?
