What's the Team Macmillan experience like?

How do I apply for my own place?

The Virgin Money London Marathon official entry ballot opens 7 days after the preceding London Marathon.

We strongly recommend that you enter the ballot as soon as it opens as the high volume of entries causes it to reach capacity very quickly. Simply visit www.virginlondonmarathon.com for updates on the ballot opening date and click on 'Enter the Race' to register for the ballot.

The ballot results are then announced in the first week of October. If you are one of the lucky ones who get a place in the Virgin Money London Marathon official entry ballot, then we'd love you to sign up to run for Team Macmillan. There is no minimum sponsorship amount, we just ask you to raise as much as you possibly can.

If you are unsuccessful or didn't have a chance to apply, then all is not lost. You can apply for a Team Macmillan charity (golden bond) place.

When do I find out if I'm successful in the ballot?

Ballot results are announced during the first week of October, and you will be notified through the post if you’re successful, as you will receive a 'You’re In' magazine. If you are unsuccessful and donated your entry fee, you will receive an 'I’m Sorry' magazine along with your free running top. If you did not donate your fee, you will receive an email.

If you are successful in securing a place, we would love to have you as part of Team Macmillan. You'll be able to sign up for Team Macmillan just up on the right once the ballot has closed. If you are unsuccessful in the ballot, you can apply for a Team Macmillan golden bond place here too.

How do I apply for a Macmillan guaranteed place?

You can apply for a Team Macmillan Golden Bond place, for which we ask that you pledge to raise a minimum sponsorship pledge of £2,000 (not including Gift Aid), using the online application form. It is found on the 'About This Event' tab.

How much do I have to raise for a Macmillan golden bond charity place?

We ask that all our charity place runners pledge to raise a minimum of £2,000, not including Gift Aid. This will be due one month after the event. Of course, we'll give you all the encouragement and support you need to smash that target.

This is applicable for successful golden bond applicants only. Macmillan Cancer Support Trading Limited will supply you with your Golden Bond Place for the Virgin Money London Marathon. Each place costs us money and we therefore ask that to accept your Team Macmillan Golden Bond place you send us a registration fee of £50 (including VAT). If you do this Macmillan will also be able to claim the tax back on the cost of the place.

If you have your own place, then we just ask you to raise as much as possible. But you can rest assured we'll provide you with just the same level of care and support that our guaranteed place runners receive.

What is your 'own place'?

‘Own place' refers to ballot entries, Good For Age entries, or any other method of obtaining a London Marathon place that isn’t a charity place. If you are on one of these places, you will have paid an entry fee directly to Virgin Money London Marathon organisers to confirm your entry.

After the official entry ballot results are announced during the first week of October, you will have received a letter from Virgin Money London Marathon stating that you have a place in the marathon, together with an 'You’re In' Magazine. If this is the case, congratulations - we'd be delighted to have you as part of Team Macmillan. You can join Team Macmillan online now.

Unsuccessful ballot entrants will receive an 'I’m Sorry' magazine or email from the race organisers notifying them of their unsuccessful entry.

What is a charity/golden bond place?

Charity/golden bond places are race entries offered by charities in return for commitment to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship.

Charities purchase them directly from the race organisers and are another way of entering the Virgin Money London Marathon if you were unsuccessful in the ballot or unable to enter it. They are incredibly limited and are heavily oversubscribed.

To secure a place, you must apply via the online application form.

Eight Team Macmillan cheer-points

Team Macmillan will be in full force in London supporting you every step of the way with eight fantastic Macmillan cheer-points along the marathon route. These cheer-points are well renowned for going crazy when they see a Team Macmillan runner.

'At the risk of over-doing it, they were the most inspirational, supportive, incredible sources of encouragement I have ever seen.' Tom, Team Macmillan runner

Team Macmillan Pasta Party

This is a great opportunity to meet your fellow team-mates in central London, stock up on some delicious pasta the evening before your big run and calm any pre-race nerves.

'The atmosphere was buzzing and really set my mind at ease with talking to others. Being my first major run I didn't know what to expect and certainly the talk with the Macmillan representatives and the speech by the 'experienced runners' helped more than others will ever know.' Justin, Team Macmillan runner

Team Macmillan Recovery Centre

Located close to the marathon finishing area at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, this is your chance to lap up some well deserved pampering after your marathon run away from the crowds. Plus have a sports massage, get changed and enjoy plenty of refreshments.

'Once again the support received made me feel like royalty. To get a cheer by everyone in that huge room just showed how much it meant to them. Macmillan have really shown their true colours this weekend and I have to say they are one of the (if not the) most amazing charities out there. The location of the recovery centre was perfect, the atmosphere and refreshments were perfect and the massage was perfect...there's not a great deal more I can say but "perfect".' Justin, Team Macmillan runner

And if that’s not enough, you’ll be part of one of the biggest UK charity teams in this famous run, who will give you plenty of support and encouragement during those long miles.

Be part of Team Macmillan.

This event could raise
