'I decided to set myself a challenge, and use it to help Macmillan help others, like my friend Jacqui. By doing sponsored walks, I can keep my fond memories of Jacqui alive, and support Macmillan’s great work.'
'I did the Cambridge River Walk this year in memory of my friend Jacqui, who sadly passed away eight years ago. She seemed to have recovered well from a double mastectomy
, but Jacqui was then diagnosed with cancer of the spine
. I knew her for 14 years, and it seemed so unfair that such a lovely person should pass away so young. She was just 38, and left four children.
'If there is a positive to take from it, I know she received great care and support from Macmillan, which will have made her illness easier to deal with their charitable dedication inspired me to do my bit.
'I wanted to do something more challenging in Jacqui’s memory and help raise as much money as I could for Macmillan.
If there is a positive to take from it, I know she received great care and support from Macmillan.
'So this year I persuaded a neighbour to join me on the Cambridge River Walk to raise money for Macmillan. We chose the longest route – 19 miles – and we were the first to cross the line. It felt good to take on a bigger challenge and do it for Jacqui. I really enjoyed it, and I’ll definitely be doing it again next year.'
