Triathlon training made easy
7 steps to triathlon success
1. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
It is likely you are already strong in one discipline but you may not have run, cycled or swam in years. This is where you need to devote the extra time to training. Check out our past triathletes and how they got started.
2. Decide what you need
You may need to invest in a new pair of running trainers, wetsuit and bike. Don’t worry if this sounds a lot as it may be easier just to hire what you need.
3. Finding the right training plan
Knowing what your strengths and weakness are will help you to tailor your training. Take a look at various training plans to see what suits your distance and currently ability.
4. Start training!
As you start training you will start to see areas where you may need to do extra training. Track your training as you go so you can monitor your progress. If you have GPS on your mobile then you can download, Endomondo Sports Tracker, a free application to transform your mobile phone into a personal trainer.
5. Learn your transitions
Moving between the different stages of a triathlon is where time can easily be lost. Make sure you practice moving from each section by combining your training. Take a look at some top tips from previous Team Macmillan triathletes.
6. Mix it up
The great thing with triathlon is you can mix your training up with swimming, cycling and running. If you don’t fancy running one evening then you can hit the swimming pool or get on your bike. Also try gym glasses like spinning and circuit training to help build up your strength if the weather is a bit grim.
7. Most importantly, enjoy your training
Nothing can de-motivate you more if you are not enjoying your training. Get friends and family to join you when training to help keep you motivated. Also keep in mind the reason why you entered the race, when it gets tough this will get you to the finish line.
