How do I join Team Macmillan to fundraise?Back to top
If you have already signed up and paid for your place directly from the swim organisers (and have received confirmation of this), we would love to have you as part of Team Macmillan, raising money for people affected by cancer. Once you’ve secured your own place, register to join Team Macmillan online and we’ll send you a fundraising pack containing lots of fundraising and training advice.
An aquathlon is a two-stage event involving a swim and a run. For this event, the distances are a 1km open water swim and a 5km run (two laps around the lake). For more details and a route map please click here.
How much sponsorship do I need to raise?Back to top
We do not ask for a minimum amount of sponsorship - whatever you raise we are extremely grateful for and it will go a long way to helping people living with cancer.
What kind of support will Macmillan give me?Back to top
When you join Team Macmillan you will be supported throughout your entire Yorkshire Swimming Festival experience. In addition to our initial training and fundraising pack, we will send you regular newsletters full of tips to help you prepare for the big day. And if that isn’t enough, we will be there on the day to give you all the support, encouragement and congratulations you deserve (not to mention a nice hot drink after your swim!).
Will Macmillan help me with my training?Back to top
Of course! When you sign up to swim in the Yorkshire Swimming Festival with Team Macmillan, we will provide you with a comprehensive training pack and regular newsletters full of top training tips, including advice from our Team Macmillan patrons. We will also advise you of other useful sources of information to help you prepare for the big day.
What happens if I get injured?Back to top
If you get injured while training we recommend you contact your GP, physio or specialist sports injury clinic. They will be able to advise if you are fit enough to swim.
If you do need to withdraw you will need to inform the Yorkshire Swimming Festival race organisers as soon as possible. Please also let Macmillan know so that we can update our database.
Do I have to wear a wetsuit for this event?Back to top
Yes. A wetsuit and wave-specific swimming cap are compulsory for both swim distances. You will need to provide your own wetsuit (although these can be hired) but your swimming cap will be given to you on the day of the swim.
When will I receive my timing chip and event pack?Back to top
Yorkshire Swimming Festival will send your start wave time, registration details and further swim information four weeks before the swim day. You will then be required to register to swim on the day of the event where you will receive your timing chip and a numbered, wave specific swimming cap.

What difference will my sponsorship make?Back to top
The Swim For All Yorkshire Swimming Festival is a vital component of our fundraising campaign. The money raised from this event will go a long way to help people affected by cancer, for example:
- £14 could pay for a Macmillan benefits advisor for one hour, allowing them to provide welfare benefits and support advice to people affected by cancer.
- Every £100 we spend on our phone service could lead to our cancer support specialists helping people affected by cancer claim £3,322 in benefits they are entitled to.
- £554 could help run a typical large Macmillan information and support centre for one day.
- £1,000 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for seven days, providing medical and emotional support to cancer patients and their families.
