Specialist adult cancer nurses in Northern Ireland - A census of the specialist adult cancer nursing workforce in the UK, 2014
All cancer nurse specialists play a key role in patient care. They aren’t all Macmillan nurses but we are working with Northern Ireland’s health and social care services to identify where new posts are needed. Macmillan usually funds these posts for a set time, often for the first three years. After that time, the long-term funding is taken up by the trust.
According to a Northern Ireland census of CNS numbers, which was carried out in April 2014, this specialist adult cancer workforce is not growing in line with patient need. In fact, since the last survey of this kind was carried out in 2011, numbers have increased by a mere 2%, compared to a 10% rise in England.
