Darren Robb together with Tobin
Please take a moment to remember the amazing Darren Robb who has died.
The 47-year-old sailor from Coshquin, together with Tobin the dog, raised over £11,000 for Macmillan, when he sailed around Ireland on a "one man and his dog" mission last summer. You may have read about his expedition on this website because it’s not that long ago that we were posting updates and following the progress of Darren and Tobin on our Facebook page and Twitter feed.
Darren planned his trip in memory of a friend who died last year. The two had met during radiotherapy sessions at the City Hospital in Belfast. Then - weeks before his scheduled departure - Darren was told his cancer was back and that, this time, it was inoperable.
Did that stop him? No. Even the pain didn't stop him. Darren promised family and friends that he would take it easy, do the sail in stages and have someone else with him at all times. When the pain got too much, he decided he would press ahead and make it back to Derry in one long sail.
He was determined to raise money for Macmillan local support services in Derry and was a big supporter of the long-awaited radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin.
