Macmillan nurses raising money and awareness
The Breast Care Team at Walsall Manor Hospital have donated a fantastic £788 to Macmillan Cancer Support to help fund its vital work supporting people with cancer and their families.
The team consists of a Macmillan Consultant Breast Care Nurse, Macmillan Breast Clinical Nurse Specialists, a Breast Support Nurse and Clinical Support Workers, a Macmillan Health and Exercise Trainer and an outreach worker. They raised the money by holding an event in the main foyer of the hospital last month, where they sold cakes, had a bring and buy sale, lucky dips and a raffle.
They didn’t stop at just raising money though; they were also raising awareness of breast cancer and the signs and symptoms to be aware of, and offering information and support about all aspects of breast cancer.
Jenni Hodgetts, Macmillan Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialist at Walsall Manor Hospital said, 'We were delighted with the success of the day and so pleased to have raised this money for such a great charity. We decided to raise money for Macmillan as many of the team are Macmillan adopted or funded.
'Our whole team values the work Macmillan does and the training they provide. We also use many Macmillan booklets for our patients who find them extremely useful. We chose Macmillan in order to give something back and to recognize the wonderful work this charity does.'
The money will be used to help fund Macmillan’s vital cancer services including specialist nurses working throughout the NHS, a nurse-run support line and grants for cancer patients with money problems.
In Walsall the charity has already funded a Macmillan GP who works closely with colleagues to develop and improve cancer services, a Macmillan Urology Assistant Practitioner who ensures patients with urological cancers receive the highest standard of care and support and a Macmillan Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist providing psychological support.
Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Walsall, Eloise Davidson said: 'We are very grateful for this donation from this team who already do so much fantastic work each day to support people affected by cancer.
'No one should have to face cancer alone and with support like this, they won’t have to.This donation will go a long way to helping us be there for people with cancer and their families.'
