The Mad Shankers ready for the Longest Day Golf Challenge 2013
Four local golfers from Formby and Southport are aiming to raise £3000 to fund local cancer services – by playing golf.
The team, named the Mad Shankers will play 72-holes of golf, walk 20 miles and hit around 300 shots during a mammoth playing time of 16 hours.
As well as raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, the men are hoping for the chance to head to Portugal to play for the Longest Day trophy in October.
The team made up of John Morris, Alan Harkness, Dave Harrison and Mark Campbell are all past golf captains from West Lancashire, Hillside, The Hesketh and Southport and Ainsdale Golf Clubs respectively. They will play all four courses on Friday 21 June which coincides with the Longest Day. The Mad Shankers decided to take on the challenge, which is widely referred to as the 'golf marathon’ because of the work that Macmillan do to support local people affected by cancer.
John Morris said, ‘When most people will be eating their breakfast, we will have already been playing for 3 hours. We start at 4.45am at Hillside, and we hope to finish at 8.30pm at West Lancashire Golf Club. It’s going to be tough but we’re very much looking forward to it. We have received lots of support from friends and fellow golf club members and our aim is to raise £3000 for Macmillan. It is such a fantastic charity and we are very aware of the valuable work that Macmillan do.’
The four teams that score the highest and raise the most money for Macmillan will go on to play for the Longest Day Golf trophy at the prestigious Boavista Golf Resort, Lagos, Portugal.
Macmillan fundraising manager for Formby, Southport and West Lancs Grace Higgins, said, 'We are very grateful to our golfers who are taking on this golfing challenge. We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can't do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us, like the Mad Shankers.
'The money raised from this challenge will help Macmillan support people affected by cancer in Formby, Southport and West Lancs so it’s a very worthwhile way to spend a day – even one of the longest you’ll ever have!'
