The full skin cancer nurse specialist team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
Two skin cancer nurse specialists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital have been adopted by Macmillan, showing that they meet our high standards of care.
Samantha Adams and Vanessa Sternkopf will also be able to access the extensive training and development benefits that are available to Macmillan nurses.
The newly adopted members are working alongside the existing Macmillan skin cancer nurse specialists in the team, Clair McGarr, Donna Begg and Helen Williams.
Clair McGarr, Macmillan Lead Skin Cancer Nurse Specialist at the hospital, said: 'We are thrilled Samantha and Vanessa have been adopted by Macmillan, it is great to have the whole team under one title.
'Being a Macmillan Nurse makes us instantly recognisable as experienced nurses in the field, it is a respected title and professionals, patients and relatives all know what a Macmillan nurse is. The educational support for the team from Macmillan is also great.'
Clair and her team support patients throughout all stages of their cancer journey, from the point of diagnosis through to survivorship, or until the palliative phase of their illness. They provide patients, their carers and relatives with appropriate advice, information and support and also refer them to other agencies for additional support as required.
They provide a holistic approach to care, ensuring all the needs of the patient are met, whether they are medical, practical, financial or emotional. They act as the patient's advocate to make sure the care they receive is coordinated, giving them the best possible experience.
Fiona Taylor, Macmillan's development manager for Birmingham, said: 'We're so pleased to welcome these new members joining the growing number of Macmillan professionals throughout Birmingham. While they will continue to be funded by the hospital Trust they will be able to access all of Macmillan’s training and educational benefits.
Fiona added: 'By working with partners such as the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, we can ensure people affected by cancer have access to the best quality care and support, no matter what stage they are at in their cancer journey.'
