Over 550 people attend world’s largest tea party
Linda and Mike Artley from Driffield attempted to hold the world’s largest afternoon tea party to raise over £25,000.
The couple hosted over 550 people for sandwiches, cakes and tea at their wedding venue, Oaklands, in Hempholme on Saturday 30th May. Guiness World Records have been notified of this huge afternoon tea party and all details have been checked in order to qualify for the title.
Speaking about their huge event, Linda said: ‘We held a BBQ for Macmillan last year and raised about £15,000. We knew we would like to do something again one day to help. The idea for the tea party came about over a casual chat with friends and before I knew it we had decided to try and beat the world record. The record is currently 536 people! We have been incredibly well supported and I very much enjoyed the day. Macmillan is an amazing charity and I’m glad we can help to raise lots of funds and awareness for this wonderful cause’.
The tea party took place in the beautiful grounds of Oaklands and guests were required to bring their own tea cup, saucer, tea pot, spoon, knife, plate and milk jug. Sandwiches, scones, jam, cream and tea were served to every guest before games, a tombola and an auction of promises.
Local company Greencore provided 1000 sandwiches for the event completely free of charge in order to help raise as much as possible for Macmillan.
Becky Baynes, fundraising manager for Hull and East Yorkshire, said: 'Linda and Mike have created an amazing and unique event, which has been incredibly supported by their friends, family and local businesses – especially Greencore who donated a huge amount of sandwiches and came along on the day to help. It was a wonderful sunny day with a great atmosphere. Thank you from all of as at Macmillan!'
