Darlington Fundraising Group needs you
Who are we?
Darlington Fundraising Group was set up in March 2008 by Michelle Thompson who after losing her teenage sister to cancer and surviving cancer herself has been a devoted volunteer fundraiser and advocate for Macmillan over the last nine years. Five like-minded wonderful people decided they too would like to fundraise for a local group and soon that figure rose to sixteen volunteers raising over £80,000 in 4 years.
What do we do?
We have held lots of events over the last four years including Easter Egg Hunts, Afternoon Teas, Supermarket Collections, Teddy Bears Picnics, Coffee Mornings, Charity Night Bonanzas and of course our annual Macmillan Toddle. Not only do we fundraise but we raise awareness for Macmillan by holding stalls at various health days, fun days, the annual Darlington Carnival and in the Cornmill. Some of us enjoy raising our profile by being interviewed on the local radio and in the local press whilst others are a little shy and prefer organising raffles and tombolas. We have attended cheque presentations and charity nights with one local working men’s club raising £18,500 for us which left us all speechless.
What can you do?
Macmillan was started by a volunteer and volunteers are very much at the heart of everything they do. Thousands of volunteers dedicate their time, skills and energy to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer. There are over 500 fundraising groups throughout the UK and we need you to help us grow and raise much needed funds for people living with cancer in our local area.
You don’t need any particular skills or experience to join our Darlington Fundraising Group. We have very informal monthly meetings at the Dolphin Centre Cafe where we enjoy a coffee and a catch up before we look at what needs to be done.
We’re a mixed bunch, both male and female, from all walks of life and different age groups. We would love you to come along and find out how you can help to change lives whilst gaining a whole range of skills and experience and a whole new set of friends too.
