This summer, join us for a big, beautiful sponsored walk to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Come together with hundreds of other people to make sure no one has to face cancer alone. Miles for Macmillan is our national fundraising walking event which is supported by our partner Boots UK.
This is Lynn Anderson's (of Local Town, Crook, County Durham) story about her involvement with Macmillan, and giving back via sponsored walks:
When Lynn's husband Neville was diagnosed with cancer, we were advised by the GP to get Macmillan involved as soon as Neville was diagnosed. Up until then I only associated Macmillan with end of life care, but we got help with completing benefit forms etc and also received regular visits from Janet Walker our Macmillan Nurse.
She attended most of Neville’s hospital appointments with us and liaised with GP regarding dosage of pain relief. Janet was always there to speak to about any concerns and was at our home within the hour when we needed her regarding Neville’s hospital discharge. She visited on a daily basis towards the end and gave fantastic support to Neville and all the family.
Neville also received help with bathing etc twice daily towards the end which allowed Neville to stay in his own bed, something that meant a lot to us both
Lynn and her family decided to arrange a tribute fund for Neville as they were so grateful for the help and support that they received during this difficult time.
Neville was a very proud man and would have wanted to contribute to the ‘pot he took from’.
With fantastic support from family & friends they have raised over £15,000 since February 2011 and are hoping to reach £20,000 by the end of the year.
Some of the money raised has come from taking part in a sponsored walks for Macmillan the past 2 years, as Neville was a builder they all dressed in builders outfits, this was great fun and was a lovely way for all his family and friends to remember Neville.
Lynn said, 'Raising money for Macmillan has also been a great help to me. Not only has it given me something to focus on, it has allowed me to enjoy myself along the way.
'It has also brought my family & friends closer around me and none of this could have been achieved without them. Words can’t express enough how grateful we are for everything Macmillan did for us and we would like to help to ensure that others can receive the same.
'I really hope people will take part in Miles for Macmillan and raise money for Macmillan. They have really helped me and my family and by raising sponsorship, it will mean they can help many more.'
