Karen braving the wind and the rain
Karen Aspinall decided to do something different to celebrate her birthday, and started training for a Lands End to John O’Groats challenge. Little did she know, nothing could prepare her for the challenge she was about to face!
Karen set off to Lands End in April, her first challenge was a chest infection and she was told to go to bed! As she travelled on to Bristol she fell off her bike and injured her leg. Never one to shy away from a challenge she got straight back on the bike, but was hit by a car in Bolton.
Not letting this stop her she made it up to the Lake District and on up to Scotland. The weather took a turn for the worse at Loch Lomond and Karen was stranded at the Youth hostel hoping the weather would improve. She was forced to get a bus some of the way due to the poor weather and then finally arrived at John O’Groats 22nd April in (Gale force winds again!)
The whole challenge took Karen 20 days, and during that time she had to battle terrible weather conditions, had the wind in her face most of the way, and later found out when she fell off her bike in Bristol she got an internal infection in her leg which she is still having treatment for.
Karen only decided to get sponsored for her challenge after Christmas and Macmillan are so grateful that they became the chosen charity for all the money raised.
Local Fundraising Manager Pauline Craig says, 'We are so amazed Karen managed to complete this mammoth cycle given all the challenges she had to overcome. I think she is incredible and we are really grateful that Macmillan was chosen as the charity to receive the incredible sponsorship. A massive thank you to Karen and everyone who sponsored her!'
