Sofia and her Dad at the summit of Ben Nevis
Six year old Sofia Ross from Thorney has just returned from climbing Ben Nevis to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Sofia battled a very windy downpour but still managed to make the round trip in 7 hours and 10 minutes.
Sofia, who has been asking to climb the challenging peak for some time now, was accompanied by her Father, Mark Ross and her Grandfather. Sofia said: “I have always wanted to climb it and Daddy said I can when I was 6. I'm now 6 years old and really really want to do this.” Well equipped with hiking boots and a walking stick and having completed a training run on Glen Nevis the trio embarked on their challenge. Battling fierce winds they made it to the snow capped summit in great time.
Sofia is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support after the support they gave to her Nanny, Jackie, when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012. Jackie lost a considerable amount of weight throughout her treatment and therefore needed all new clothes. With the cost of a cancer diagnosis already extremely high (an estimated £570 a month) this is an extra cost that is often un-manageable. Jackie received a grant from Macmillan to help pay for the extra clothes that she needed and Sofia’s challenge is a way of saying thank you for the support that her Nanny received. Macmillan also provide grants for things like extra bedding and fuel costs so that people can feel more like themselves and carry out their treatment with dignity. Jessica Levin, local fundraising manager for Macmillan stated: “We are so grateful Sofia has chosen to raise money for Macmillan. Sofias motivation is truly inspirational and she has done an amazing job raising funds to help support people affected by cancer.”
Thanks to the fantastic support from her school and from friends and family Sofia has already managed to smash her fundraising target of £500.
