Celebrating all round
Mike Pilling and Matt Davis decided to cycle from London to Paris on their bikes for the third time to support and raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. So far they have raised over £2000.00 which is fantastic.
We asked Mike why.....
'Well where do you start? It was last November that I and my good pal Matt Davis decided to once again do an event for Macmillan. We could not make up our minds and then Matt said let's do London to Paris on the bike. Now having done the event twice before I do know how hard it is but we said yes and as they say the rest is history.
'The thing that I did not know was the fact that I was once again in the grip of cancer. In 2004 I had head and neck cancer and this time it was colon cancer. It was found on 23rd February this year and I had my operation on the 10th March and started chemo treatment 6 weeks after. I was taking the chemo while on the ride.
'The ride came very quick and I was not as fit as I should have been but was determined to do what I could to help Macmillan. (I lost my mother, father and twin brother in 7 years all to cancer).
'We went to London on the 30th June and were not sure that the ride was on due to the French strike. It was and we set off on the 1st July heading to Paris. What we did not know at the time was we were riding in the hottest week of the year on both sides of the channel. 36 - 43 F.
'We all made it to Paris but I did have a few problems on the way with the heat and humidity plus the small hills that were called undulations or something like that (mountains is the correct title!)
'The days were broken down into 4 sections with water stops and lunch on route. We were so well looked after not only by Macmillan but Discover Adventure.
'I would like to say I will not be doing the ride again but would recommend it to any one for an adventure of a life time.'
The Fundraising Team from Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire would like to say a massive thank you to Mike and Matt for supporting us.
