The Grant Bradley Gallery in Bristol is hosting a 21-day exhibition from the 8 March, featuring the work of Ludlow resident Ashley Green.
The exhibition, called 'On the trail of the lonesome pine', is supported by Macmillan and uses photography to document Ashley’s journey through radiotherapy after he was diagnosed with a rare form of mouth cancer in 1991.
Ashley hopes to raise awareness amongst the public of cancer and the physical and emotional effects of its treatment, and also show other patients there can be a positive future beyond the disease. Over 450 photos which will be exhibited, beginning with a private viewing and launch on 7 March, at 6pm-9pm with drinks and nibbles provided.
Ashley says: 'I decided to take photos documenting each day of my radiotherapy treatment as a reminder of my journey, but also to distract myself from the boredom of the long hours of waiting, travelling and being away from my family. That’s why a lot of the photos focus on the importance of having a good support network around you, including the clinical team and also family and friends.'
'I think a lot of people still see cancer as something they don’t want to talk about; they associate it with death. Doing something creative helped me see things in a positive way and allowed me to produce something of value. It gave me a small amount of control in a situation that frequently felt a long way out of control.'
Maggie Crowe, Macmillan Development Manager for Bristol, says: 'This really is a fabulous piece of work that showcases cancer survivorship. Ashley’s photos have a positive message, that with the right support you don’t have to face it alone.'
Marten Röstel, Manager at The Grant Bradley Gallery said: 'Ashley's photographic project portrays an emotional journey which also carries an important message. We aim to provide an evocative and touching exhibition to a wide audience.'
