Charmaine encouraged Della to join a support group. She was unsure at first: ‘But after I’d had a taste, I wanted to find a support group for Africans. I couldn’t find one in my area, so I got a grant from Macmillan to start my own.’
As well as running her support group, Della is also raising awareness in her home country of Nigeria. ‘I think Nigerians just need to be educated about cancer. They need to know it does exist, but it can be treated. I take things back with me to raise awareness – like Macmillan leaflets and booklets. I’ve even been on TV over there.’
‘There is life after cancer. I’m now doing a massage course. I even go running. And I try to eat well. So there are some good things to come out of it. But without Macmillan I wouldn’t have gotten this far. I would have just stayed in my little shell.’
