Europe’s biggest single price value retailer Poundland has exceeded its £1million fundraising target for charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support, raising just over £1,035,000 since choosing to support the leading cancer care charity in 2009. The vital funds will help Macmillan ensure that no one faces cancer alone.
Customers and colleagues of the business, which recently floated on the stock market, have been integral to the success of the fundraising-driven charity partnership. Poundland colleagues have taken on activities such as a 24 hour Three Peaks Challenge, where they conquered Britain’s highest mountains. They have cycled from London to Paris and participated in the London marathon, as well as organising dress-down days and raffles in-store to help Poundland reach its target. Charity products bought by customers have also helped to bolster the brimming fundraising coffers for Macmillan.
This week will see Poundland and Macmillan celebrating the incredible milestone with a road show, taking in some of the top fundraising stores around the country, including the UK’s number one fundraising store in Sunderland, and the Retail Head Office in Willenhall, showcasing a giant Macmillan fundraising canister alongside oversized £1 coins to channel the fun loving spirit the partnership has bought to the retail partner’s stores and staff.
Jim McCarthy, Chief Executive at Poundland says: 'I am delighted that we have reached and even exceeded our fundraising target for Macmillan. Our customers and colleagues have voted to continue to support Macmillan on a continuous basis since 2009, and we have seen some fantastic members of our team going above and beyond for a charity that has touched many of us personally. I am proud that we’ve been able to hand over a cheque for over £1million to continue to fund the vital work Macmillan does.'
Lynda Thomas, Director of Fundraising at Macmillan Cancer Support says: 'Huge congratulations to everyone at Poundland who has worked so incredibly hard to raise this money for Macmillan. We are grateful for your ongoing support, and the money you have raised will go a long way to helping Macmillan to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Thank you.'
The money raised by Poundland helps fund Macmillan’s practical, emotional, medical and financial support that helps people affected by cancer take back control of their lives.
