A team of 15 npower employees have raised a staggering £200,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in what is believed to be one of the highest World’s Biggest Coffee Mornings, at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Whilst everyone across the UK was celebrating Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning down at ground level, the 15 climbers decided to have their own Coffee Morning at 5,895 metres above sea level, at the summit of Africa’s highest peak.
The trekkers from across the UK approached the mountain through the remote north-eastern side and followed the Rongai route, taking seven days to acclimatise and reach the summit.
The expedition target was to raise £50,000 for Macmillan, npower’s charity partner – however, the climbers managed to smash this target four fold and have achieved a massive £200,000, including matched funding from npower.
One of the climbers, Alecsa from npower’s Solihull office says: 'It was an amazing experience to stand on the summit of Kilimanjaro at practically the same time as colleagues in Solihull were hosting their own Coffee Morning for Macmillan. We decided to commemorate the event with a coffee break of our own!'
'But getting there wasn’t easy; it was probably the biggest challenge of my life! It was a super-human effort to hit the top – undoubtedly, the special bond between the team helped push us all to the absolute limit for this great cause. I am so proud of what we have achieved - a truly once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget!'
npower has been working with Macmillan for nine years and the partnership is valued at over £6m.
