Responding to the appointment of Andrew Lansley MP as the new Secretary of State for Health, Mike Hobday, Head of Campaigns, Policy and Public Affairs, said:
'Macmillan is delighted to welcome Andrew Lansley MP as the new Secretary of State for Health. Over the last six years, in his role as Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley has shown his strong commitment to the NHS and his intention to empower patients and improve their experience of their treatment and support. Macmillan looks forward to working with the new Health Secretary to ensure that our NHS best serves the 300,000 people diagnosed with cancer every year, and the 2 million people living with or beyond cancer.
During the election Macmillan asked all parties to increase support to people with cancer before, during and after their treatment. We want to work with the coalition Government to see continued improvements made to the Department of Health’s cancer policy. We hope that manifesto commitments including the creation of a cancer drug fund of £200 million will be implemented quickly, so we can make a start on improving the lives of people affected by cancer.'
