Ciarán Devane, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“The Government’s response shows real commitment to ensuring patient experience and safety remains at the heart of the NHS so the scandal at Mid-Staffs is never repeated.
“These recommendations are a good starting point. However, I would be concerned if there continued to be an over-reliance on regulation. This would lead to staff remaining constrained by bureaucracy, taking their attention and time away from delivering high-quality care.
“We are especially pleased that the Government has endorsed our Macmillan Values Based Standard . Macmillan has spent a lot of effort developing them and if implemented they would help staff at all levels to ensure that the principles of dignity and respect are embedded throughout the NHS.”

Notes to Editors:
1. Macmillan is working with partner organisations to improve patient and staff experience through the Macmillan Values Based Standard®. This is a set of practical behaviours based on key aspects of care that matter to patients and staff, which they – along with carers and family members - worked together to design. Staff say that the Macmillan Values Based Standard® provides them with a practical approach to improve patient experience.
About Macmillan Cancer Support
More than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder.
But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way.
We are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
Together, we are all Macmillan Cancer Suppor
