Responding to the publication of the new NICE end of life quality standard, Adrienne Betteley, Macmillan Cancer Support, Palliative and End of Life Care Programme Manager, said:
'We welcome the publication of this new standard. Macmillan Cancer Support is committed to high quality, coordinated end of life care to enable patients to fulfil their end of life care wishes. We believe one the most important aspects of this being a reality is by providing access to 24/7 community nursing as it significantly reduces emergency hospital admissions.
'The reference in these guidelines to support ‘day and night’ is particularly encouraging and for this reason we are extremely hopeful that adherence to these guidelines will lead to a vastly improved quality of end of life care in this country.'
