MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT RESPONDS TO FEBRUARY’S CANCER WAITING TIMES
Responding to data on February’s 62 day target from urgent referral to the start of treatment published by NHS England, Moira Fraser, director of policy, public affairs and campaigns at Macmillan Cancer Support said:
“Nobody should have to go through the horrible uncertainty of waiting more than two months to start cancer treatment, and yet this continues to happen to thousands of people in England each month. Apart from the terrible anxiety it can cause at an already difficult time, a delayed start to treatment could affect a patient’s prospects after treatment.
“It is a major concern that the number of cancer patients being treated within two months was under 80 per cent for the second time ever. This target1 has now been missed for 14 months in a row.
“Last month in its update to the Five Year Forward View, NHS England committed to fixing delays to cancer waiting times. NHS England must now make clear how it intends to do so – cancer patients are depending on it.”
