Ciarán Devane will move on as Chief Executive after seven years at the helm of Macmillan Cancer Support.
He will leave Macmillan at the end of October, before joining the British Council as Chief Executive in January 2015.
Ciarán joined Macmillan in May 2007 and since then the charity has undergone a remarkable transformation. During his tenure, annual fundraising income has doubled and cancer services have expanded. In 2013, the charity provided information and support to 5.2 million people affected by cancer.
Ciarán led the charity to be at the forefront of cancer care research, groundbreaking redesign projects and campaigns to improve cancer survivorship. He also oversaw the charity’s strategy overhaul and rebrand, securing Macmillan’s position as the most trusted and loved charity in the UK.
Julia Palca, Chair of Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
"Under Ciarán’s guardianship we have become the leading cancer care charity in the UK, reaching millions of people affected by cancer each year. He has made a hugely significant contribution towards Macmillan reaching its ambition of improving the lives of everyone affected by cancer.
“Ciarán’s drive, passion and determination to help us fulfill our ambition to help everyone affected by cancer is inspiration to us all and we are enormously thankful to him. He will be very sadly missed."
“It has been a huge honour to lead Macmillan for the past seven years. It has been a difficult decision, but the chance to work with the British Council, an organisation I have long admired, was one I could not resist. The chance to lead cultural relations in over a hundred countries is an exciting challenge and an opportunity that I relish taking on.
“I’m particularly proud of the progress Macmillan has made on the survivorship agenda and on the research that identified the nine things cancer patients really want the NHS to do for them which underpins everything the charity does.”

About Macmillan Cancer Support
More than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder.
But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way.
We are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
Together, we are all Macmillan Cancer Support
