Whilst the official Virgin Active London Triathlon ballot closed in February, Macmillan Cancer Support has some final places available until Friday 5th July. The iconic event is now only a month away with 13,000 participants set to swim, cycle and run the course on Saturday 27th – Sunday 28th July.
Macmillan Cancer Support, the official London Triathlon charity along with Scope, will have 600 competitors taking part over the weekend, raising money to help ensure that no-one has to face cancer alone. ‘Team Macmillan’ will also be made up of several celebrities who are captaining relay teams made up of Macmillan supporters and service users who have been affected by cancer.
Gareth Thomas, former Welsh rugby international and Macmillan team captain, says: 'I’m so pleased to be captaining a team of Macmillan triathletes and taking on the cycling leg. It will be great to raise as much money as possible and hopefully it won’t get too competitive! Triathlon is great because it keeps you fit on so many different levels- it’s a totally different kind of training to what I’m used to, I’m definitely out of my comfort zone!'
Other celebrity captains include former cricketer Mark Ramprakash, 2012 Great British Bake Off finalist Cathryn Dresser and father and son duo Stavros Flatley from Britain’s Got Talent. TV presenter Zoe Hardman is taking on the individual sprint distance.
The Virgin Active London Triathlon is the world’s largest triathlon and has a rich history of fundraising, with over £1.2million raised by competitors in 2012. Distances include Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic and Olympic Plus distances, along with the option to enter individually or as part of a relay team, encouraging individuals of all ages and fitness abilities to take part.
Macmillan Cancer Support Challenge Events Manager, Hayley Short, says: 'We are delighted to be the official charity partner for the Virgin Active London Triathlon. Swimming, cycling and running against the majestic background of London is a fantastic way to spend the weekend and a great way to support Macmillan and help ensure that no-one has to face cancer alone.'
Along with what promises to be a fantastic day out, charity participants will also benefit from training guidelines and advice, post race refreshments and a loud fan base cheering them on!
