This morning, 78 npower employees from npower’s offices across the North East braved a dip in the North Sea to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event took place on a windswept Sunderland beach, in temperatures of just 2◦c, shortly after 9am this morning.
The swim is the first of ten fundraising events npower employees will be doing throughout 2014, in the hopes of raising £150,000 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the energy supplier's partnership with the cancer support charity.
Employees were led into the water by Gareth Pickles, npower’s customer service director, along with some of his colleagues, who were aptly dressed as penguins for the chilly event.
Gareth said: 'I’m proud that we’ve launched '10 for 10’ in the North East with such enthusiastic staff from our Sunderland, Peterlee, Thornaby, Leeds and Hull offices. The people throughout npower are extremely passionate about our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, as it’s a charity that helps so many people.’
The ’10 for 10’ campaign aims to support people affected by cancer who are struggling to pay their energy bills. Clare McDougall, head of community at npower, added: "Often, cancer and its treatment can result in people feeling the cold more and, because they may need to put the heating on more often, this can potentially put them at risk of fuel poverty.
'Jointly with Macmillan, npower has created a Fuel Management Programme to help people affected by cancer who are struggling to pay their energy bills. We hope that the scheme helps to alleviate some of the pressures faced by people affected by cancer at such an important time, so they can keep warm without the worry.'
Part of the money that’s raised from today and the rest of the ’10 for 10’ events will also go towards funding new energy advisors on the Macmillan Support Line, who will support people affected by cancer.
The npower and Macmillan partnership, now valued in excess of £7m, aims to help Macmillan in its ambition to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.
