Lynda Bellingham - tribute
The actress and presenter was a Celebrity Ambassador for Macmillan for over 10 years and worked tirelessly to help Macmillan at every opportunity from supporting World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and Lung Cancer Awareness Week to being the voice of our fundraising ads.
Lynda was inspired to become involved with Macmillan as her cousin had been a Macmillan nurse who sadly passed away with stomach cancer in the 1980s. Her sister tragically passed away from lung cancer in 2008.
Lynda was diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2013 and was supported by Macmillan nurses throughout her treatment. She continued to support the charity in the last few weeks of her life, highly praising her team of Macmillan nurses on national TV appearances and thanking them in her memoir, published shortly before her death.
Lynda’s generosity and hard work was acknowledged when she was awarded an OBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list for her charity work.
Responding to the news of Lynda’s death, Ciarán Devane said;
"Lynda has been an admired and valued supporter of Macmillan Cancer Support for over 10 years. Not only did she raise much needed funds for our services such as our Macmillan nurses who directly helped her and her family, but she also played a vital role in helping to raise awareness of cancer. We are sending our heartfelt condolences to her family at this difficult time.”
