Dave's story

Although Dave had the support of his family when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he still felt alone at times. That’s when he’d turn to Macmillan.

‘I was in pieces. My only experience of cancer up to that point was watching my wife die from it. I was crying and worrying about how to tell the children.’

Dave needed two surgeries to remove his prostate and one kidney. ‘There were moments when I felt very alone. Waking up in the night and finding blood in your urine is a lonely place to be.’

But Dave’s Macmillan nurse, Gill, was a great support. ‘She’s always been there for me, helping me through the most difficult period of my life.’

And if he had any niggling concerns at home, there were plenty of other ways we could help.

‘I also used the Macmillan Support Line and Online Community. All of it helped because you know you’re not on your own. I shudder to think where I’d be without Macmillan.’
