Corporate volunteering - Ruth's story

I was motivated to volunteer with Macmillan after the National New Business team pitched for the Travis Perkins & Benchmarx partnership in December 2014. I was very impressed with the Macmillan staff members who facilitated the pitch and I found out about the need for corporate volunteers and the range of opportunities that Macmillan offer.

There are an array of opportunities that corporate partners can get involved in, from joining the e-campaigning network, to taking part in skill sharing or delivering the donor care calls to Macmillan supporters.

I enjoy giving my time to Macmillan because you can see the impact instantly. You can do it in your own time so whether you have got half an hour free or half a day there is always something you can do. I have really enjoyed the opportunities that have allowed me to directly support someone going through their cancer journey and it reminds you why you give up your time.

The staff at Macmillan always let me know that I am making a huge difference and that they welcome the volunteers being there. It’s always well organised and such an enjoyable day. I may not have donated £1,000 that day, but giving my time to volunteer is just as important to Macmillan. We all have hidden skills and talents and using them in a volunteering role can bring a few surprises as to what we are capable of.
