Matthew Steele

Strategic Insight Lead

Matthew leads the Strategic Insight team, Macmillan’s in-house capability that provides insight and evidence to support strategic decision making for a wide range of internal teams. The team’s role is to bring a logical, evidence-based, structured-thinking approach to problem solving and decision making within Macmillan.

The team works closely with internal stakeholders in a consultative way, to scope and guide the definition of their insight and evidence needs. Additionally, the team helps colleagues put learning and recommendations into action.

Matthew joined Macmillan in January 2007, initially holding a Business Management role within the Cancer Services Innovation department. Matthew then transferred into the newly created Strategic Insight team in September 2010, and moved up the ranks to become Strategic Insight Lead in 2015. During 2016, Matthew took parental leave and returned to his role in February 2017.

Matthew originally started out his career as a business consultant at KPMG UK in London, focusing on strategy advisory and business process improvement projects for a wide range of clients, largely in the leisure, tourism, communications and media sectors. After six years at KPMG, Matthew then worked for the BBC as a Strategy Manager within the corporate strategy team, before making a career switch into the charity sector when he took up his first role at Macmillan.
