Free prescriptions for all
A recent Macmillan online survey revealed that 33% of respondents chose not to get a treatment prescribed, because they couldn't afford the cost of the prescription. We believe prescription charges are a tax on illness and nobody in the UK should have to pay them.
Gordon Brown has just announced that there will be free prescriptions in England for cancer patients and those with long term conditions.
The Northern Ireland Health Minister has announced plans to abolish prescription charges. From January 2009 cost of prescriptions in Northern Ireland will be reduced to £3 per prescription and will be free of charge by April 2010.

Tackling fuel poverty
Macmillan is determined to ensure that people affected by cancer never suffer undue stress by worries caused by fuel bills. Our research shows that 92% of people affected by cancer suffer loss of income or higher costs as a result of a cancer diagnosis. Many people undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment and at home for long periods of time will need to heat their houses more. This results in much higher heating costs, which many people living with cancer and their families cannot afford.

Better deal on hospital car parking charges
Two of the biggest extra costs that cancer patients must deal with, are the costs of travel to and from hospital for treatment, and the cost of parking at hospital. In fact, 70% of cancer patients face extra costs just to get to their treatment. We are calling for free parking at hospitals for cancer patients. The campaign has had success in Scotland and Wales, but we still need your help to ensure a fair deal for patients in England.

Lung cancer awareness
Every 15 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with lung cancer. Early diagnosis can save lives. Each November, Macmillan joins forces with The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation to raise awareness of the UK's biggest cancer killer.

Exceptional funding
We campaign to make sure people with cancer have better access to treatments. Our previous campaigns have resulted in clinically effective drugs being made available to patients more quickly. We want to improve the transparency of the process used by Primary Care Trusts and local Health Boards to decide whether funding should be made available in exceptional circumstances to give a patient access to treatment not routinely funded by the NHS. The exceptional funding campaign will be launching in October, so watch the latest news page.
If you've been refused a cancer treatment by your Primary Care Trust or local health board, please email your story to campaigns@macmillan.org.uk
