The event is called The Big Sports Day and will be even more fun and focus on healthy living and being active. For more information please visit The Big Sports Day website.
A huge thank you to all the schools and youth groups that took part in The Big Hush 2008 and helped to raise over £330,000 for Macmillan. We are confident that with your support The Big Sports Day will help us raise even more money to make a real difference to the two million people living with cancer in the UK.
Last year 888 schools and groups from across the UK took part and raised over £320,000 for people living with cancer. This year we want to make it even bigger and we need your help!
Taking part in The Big Hush couldn't be easier – or more fun! You can sign up the whole school or a single class, and organise the children to be sponsored for every minute they keep quiet, or pay a small amount to take part. Every penny they raise will help improve the lives of people living with cancer.
Cancertalk – helping children and young people talk about cancer
Every school community is affected by cancer in some way. Maybe a teacher, parent, grandparent or a pupil in your school has been diagnosed with the illness.
Macmillan's Cancertalk education programme offers free teaching packs and online resources to support learning about cancer. The resources focus on emotional and practical issues faced by people with cancer and those close to them. They also give children and young people the facts about the illness, and advice on making healthy lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of getting cancer. These education resources help teachers deal confidently with some of the questions and concerns children may have about cancer.
The Cancertalk teaching pack includes:
-
a teacher's support booklet
-
easy to photocopy lessons plans and worksheets
-
Cancertalk DVD with teacher's and classroom modules
-
poster
-
real life experiences of people affected by cancer.
These materials are regularly revised and updated to meet the latest requirements for citizenship, PSHE/PSE/PSD and the new primary strategy, with links to other curriculum subjects.
Cancertalk Week – 21 to 25 January 2008
The week leading up to The Big Hush is Cancertalk Week. It's the perfect opportunity for your school to focus on the issues raised in the Cancertalk pack by organising a special assembly, an awareness-raising activity or a series of lessons on cancer.
This will help your pupils have a better understanding of why they are doing The Big Hush and how the money they raise will help people living with cancer.
