Surgery
Surgery aims to remove all or as much as possible of the cancer growth.
In some cases, all or part of a cancer can be removed surgically. Your operation should be explained to you carefully by the medical team, and you should have a chance to ask any questions [PDF, 32 Kb] to make sure that you understand what is to be done and the effects of the operation.
If it is complicated surgery that will have consequences for how you live afterwards – such as a colostomy or laryngectomy – you may be introduced to a specialist nurse or counsellor who you can talk things through with.
It may be a good idea to talk to someone who has been through the same procedure. Ask what services are available in your area or contact the Macmillan CancerLine who will signpost what is available to you.
