  • Some words worth reading
Local supporters, Colin and Bunny Silverlock, are raising funds for Macmillan by providing us with some rhymes for the times.
  • The Windmill Walk - a step in the right direction!
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Windmill Walk on Sunday 10 May. The event was once again a huge success with over 220 enjoying the spring sunshine over the South Downs and down by Rottingdean Windmill.

Nellie's annual walking event attracted 91 people in October 2008, raising over £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This was the 32nd walk of its kind, set up by Nellie Curtis MBE.

We have two fundraising teams working hard in West Sussex.

In the Midhurst area, we continue to support the Macmillan Community Pallative Care service which provides care and support at home or in the local community for people with cancer, their families and carers.

Throughout the rest of West Sussex we have Macmillan nurses, doctors and other health professionals providing vital support to thousands of local people with cancer and their families. But there are many more who need our help.

Raising funds for people living with cancer in West Sussex

The Sussex fundraising team works together with volunteers, local groups, individuals, people affected by cancer, local businesses and Macmillan professionals to create awareness about Macmillan and raise funds to help improve the lives of people living with cancer and their families.

Some of the local cancer services we are currently funding include:

  • Welfare Rights Advisors based in Citizens' Advice Bureaux in Littlehampton, Worthing and Lancing, providing guidance and support on the benefits people living with cancer are entitled to.
  • A GP facilitator for the Adur, Arun and Worthing area who will work with local GPs to make sure they have the most up to date information regarding the care of people with cancer
  • An information manager at the Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre in Crawley who provides information and support to people affected by cancer and their families
  • A Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist concentrating on cancers of the stomach and digestive system based at Worthing Hospital.

We need your support to raise funds to continue providing specialist services for local people with cancer. Our aim is to help everyone affect by cancer by 2010 and to do this, we need your help.

Join us by taking part in our Peacehaven abseil, sponsored Windmill Walk or World's Biggest Coffee Morning; organise your own fundraising event or collection, or join a local fundraising committee.

At Macmillan, we find that a powerful way to gain support for our work is by using personal stories to illustrate how we have helped people affected by cancer. These stories are about people who have benefited from Macmillan's services. Should you wish to share your personal story with us, then please contact Laura Palmer on 01273 746601 or e-mail: lpalmer@macmillan.org.uk.
