Whether you're taking part in surveys, helping to develop a strategy or reviewing a resource, your actions make a big difference. Here Cancer Voices tell you more about the opportunities on offer.
We'll be introducing new Cancer Voices over the course of the year - so please watch this space...
'When I was being treated for lung cancer, I told my Macmillan nurse Hayley that, if I got strong enough again, I’d like to help others by talking about my experience. When I heard about Cancer Voices I knew it was the right thing for me.
'So far, I’ve given a talk at a lung cancer study day for nurses; I’ve attended a focus group; and spoken at meetings for different health professionals. I’ve also written book reviews for patients and carers.
'I’m a great believer in talking to as wide a range of people as you can. When I was in the Navy, I always made sure I understood how my troops were affected by their experiences at sea. In the same way, I think it’s important that medical professionals hear about patients’ experiences. Giving feedback can really benefit a system.
'I get a lot out of Cancer Voices. Speaking about my cancer is cathartic. And knowing I’m helping drives me; it gives me the energy I need to get out and about.
'If my contribution helps just one nurse with a patient consultation in the future, it would definitely have been worth it.'
'I was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2002. Once I’d finished treatment I knew I wanted to give something back.
'Participating in the Survivorship programme, as a Cancer Voice, has given me the opportunity to meet regularly with cancer patients who've suffered recurrences and need support dealing with this difficult news. I can help them by sharing my own experiences, or by lending an ear and listening to what they're going through.
'Being a Cancer Voice has helped me in many ways and sharing my story has built my confidence. You can feel very alone when you have cancer. Only a fellow patient really knows the rollercoaster of emotions and fears that you experience. I’ve made many friends through attending meetings and other Cancer Voices events.
'Eight years after being made redundant because of my illness, I’ve finally managed to find a job. I honestly don’t think I would have got to this stage without the confidence and self-belief that being a Cancer Voice has given back to me.'
