Since 2005 Macmillan has campaigned in all four nations of the UK to overturn this tax on illness and end prescription charges.
We are delighted that the governments have listened to people affected by cancer and thank everyone who has supported this campaign. This success demonstrates that Macmillan is a force for change and we will continue to challenge the other unfair costs which people affected by cancer face.
Last year Macmillan research revealed that nearly half of cancer patients in England were being forced to cut back on basic needs, such as food or heating, in order to pay for their prescriptions. In September 2008, Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced free prescriptions in England for cancer patients and those with long term illnesses.
Patients can now apply for a prescription exemption form. Find out how to apply|.
From January 2009 the cost of prescriptions will be reduced to £3 per prescription and will be free of charge by April 2010.
From April 2008, charges for prescriptions and pre-payment certificates are being reduced annually and are set to be abolished in April 2011.
Prescription charges were abolished from April 2007.
This campaign has already won high praise this year with three awards; Voluntary Sector Campaign of the Year, PA News Awards, Best Public Affairs Campaign and Best Not for Profit Campaign, CIPR. Find out more|.

It was the most wonderful news to hear that after all our campaigning for free prescriptions, the government listened. I've been going without some of my medications because I couldn't afford them all. This news is such a relief and next year the huge financial burden and worry will be lifted. Fiona, an E-campaigner
