One event was enough for most, but Duncan signed up for all five of the 2011 British Gas Great Swims for Macmillan. Here he explains how and why he did it.
Duncan, 41, took part in all five of the 2011 British Gas Great Swims for Macmillan. He lost his Grandfather to lung cancer and has had other family members affected, so felt Macmillan was the perfect cause for him to swim for. 'A lot of people at work have been very generous and friends have dug deep. Once they hear who you’re swimming for they all agree that it’s a good cause.'
Having always enjoyed swimming, Duncan decided to take on all five of the swims and wear a different coloured rubber duck on his swimming cap each time. By the final swim in Scotland, and having already taken on Salford Quays, Alton Reservoir, Lake Windermere and the River Thames, Duncan not only had five shiny medals but five rubber ducks attached to his cap. 'If you know you’re doing it for a worthwhile cause, you becoming willing to go that little bit further and train even harder. This is the biggest personal challenge I’ve taken on and I got faster with each swim.'
He really enjoyed the personal challenge and had success with fundraising as well as the swimming itself.
'The Macmillan team gives you all the support you need. I’m certainly going to look for another challenge to fundraise for them again.'
