The general New York Marathon regsitration for the lottery will be open at the race website| from 24 April to 24 May, and will be drawn shortly after. Due to the number of runners transferring their place from the cancelled 2012 marathon to 2013, it is likely that fewer places than normal will be available through the lottery.
If you are successful and secure a place in the lottery, we’d love you to join Team Macmillan. Simply email us your details to newyorkmarathon@macmillan.org.uk|, or call us on 020 7840 4915 and we will add you to the team and send you out a fundraising and training pack.
We’ll support you every step of the way and simply ask you to raise as much sponsorship as you can.
If you’re not successful in the lottery, or you would prefer to secure your place immediately, you can still apply for a guaranteed place in the marathon through a Team Macmillan travel package| (see below).

If you have your own place then we just ask you to raise as much as possible and we'll provide you with the same level of care and support that our Team Macmillan travel package runners receive.
Your 'own place' means that you entered the ING New York Marathon lottery system and received an email directly from New York Marathon Road Runners stating that you were successful in this lottery system and have been given a place directly by them. Plus you would have paid an entry fee directly to New York Mararthon Road Runners.
If this is the case, congratulations and we'd be delighted for you to join Team Macmillan by emailing us at newyorkmarathon@macmillan.org.uk|, or by phoning 020 7840 4915. In regards to sponsorship, we ask you to raise as much as possible.
A Team Macmillan travel package place means that you have completed and sent in a Team Macmillan guaranteed place application form.
Race entry only places are not available for overseas participants, therefore the only places available are through travel packages with tour operators. Here at Macmillan we use Sports Tours International who provide three types of packages for UK residents.
Once we have received your application form and it has been successfully processed, we will give you a phone call to confirm that your application for a Team Macmillan package was successful.
From this point you will then receive a Team Macmillan Fundraising Pack and marathon training guide.
With regards to sponsorship we ask all our Team Macmillan travel package runners to raise the following amounts per package.
Package 3: Hotel, Flights and Race Entry - £3,700. This will be due in one month after the event (3 December 2013). Please make all cheques payable to Macmillan Cancer Support. Of course, we'll give you all the encouragement and support you'll need to make sure you smash this target!
Package 1 and Package 3: Accommodation is at the Belvedere Hotel (first come first served basis) on a twin or triple share basis for 3 nights. Once the Belvedere Hotel is full runners will be accomodated in the Travel Inn Hotel.
Single rooms and additional night/s accommodation are available but you will be required to pay a supplement. If you have friends or family members who would like to join you, please call Sports Tours International on 0161 703 8161 to book or for any further travel information.
Accomodation is not included in Package 2.
For Package 2, flights are operated by Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to New York JFK. Please see the Sports Tours website| for more details on the flight dates.

The New York Marathon Road Runners, the Race Organisers, will contact you directly to let you know if you have been successful in obtaining a place in the 2013 ING New York City Marathon through the lottery.
A list of all registered participants can also be found online at the New York Marathon website| once the lottery system has been drawn towards the end of April 2012. If you have any queries regarding your lottery entry, please contact them directly by emailing marathonmailer@nyrr.org|
If you are successful in the lottery system, we'd love to have you on the team! However, if you are unsuccessful all is not lost as you can apply for a Team Macmillan travel package place|.
When you join Team Macmillan you will be supported throughout your entire New York City Marathon experience. In addition to our initial fundraising and training pack, we will send you regular newsletters full of tips to help you prepare for the big day.
You will also be invited to our pre-race pasta party the night before the big race, where you can stock up on carbs and meet your fellow team mates. And if that isn't enough, we will give you the loudest support possible throughout the race from our Team Macmillan cheer points.
Sports Tours International, our tour operator, can arrange for your package to be tailored to your requirements so that you can extend your stay in New York or take family or friends with you (availability permitting).

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) - the USA has changed its entry procedures for travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme and has introduced ESTA. Online completion of ESTA is now mandatory for all Visa Waiver Programme travellers.
Once you receive confirmation of your Team Macmillan place in the ING New York Marathon, it is essential that you complete the online ESTA application form and provide us with confirmation of your ESTA. Go to the Visit USA website| to find out how to complete your ESTA.
Of course! When you sign up to run the ING New York City Marathon with Team Macmillan we will provide you with a comprehensive marathon training guide| which has programmes for beginner, intermediate and advanced runners. Plus you will receive regular newsletters full of top training tips, including advice from our Team Macmillan patrons. We will also advise you of other useful sources of information and a Guide to Marathon Day to help you prepare for your big race.
If you or any of your team-mates get injured whilst training we recommend you contact your GP, physio or specialist sports injury clinic. They will be able to advise you if you are fit enough to run.
If you do need to withdraw you will need to let the race organisers, New York Marathon Road Runners, know as soon as possible. Please also let Macmillan know so that we can advise you about transferring your place.
If, for whatever reason, you find that you have to withdraw from the event you must notify us as soon as possible so we can cancel your travel bookings. Below is the cancellation fee chart per Sports Tours International, our Tour Operators.
All runners will be required to visit the Jacob Javits Convention Centre, Halls 3E, 11th Avenue at 35th Street, Manhattan, to register for the race. There are no exceptions to this, so do ensure you allow time in your schedule to go! The opening times are as follows (times shown are for the 2012 marathon):
In order to register you will need your race registration card, which will be sent/emailed to you in mid-October, and your passport.
Failure to register will mean that you will not be permitted to take part in the marathon itself. The Expo is open to the general public and admission is free. For security reasons, attendees will be asked to show photo ID (please take your passport), and all bags and coats may be inspected. Please note, there is no baggage storage available.
More details of the Expo and everything else you need to know will be contained in your Team Macmillan pre-race newsletters.
Your official marathon time is measured exclusively using ChronoTrack timing system. This system is similar to the ChampionChip system previously used to score the ING New York City Marathon in that each entrant will wear a timing device on their shoe that will be 'read' by mats.
However, the timing device will be a tag called a D-Tag, that you will receive attached to your race number. You must remove the D-Tag from your race number and attach it to your shoe prior to the race, following the instructions. The tag is secured to runners' shoes using adhesive and a plastic clip. The tag is disposable; it will not be collected after the race.
All participants in the ING New York City Marathon, including anyone who owns a ChampionChip, must wear the D-Tag in order to have their finish recorded. No ChampionChip timing equipment will be used at this race. No tag, no time!
Visit the ING New York Marathon website| for more marathon information including international runners, travel suggestions, flight suggestions, course map, training info, local transport and much more.
