Finding time to raise money and train for your running event can be daunting, but it needn't be. Fundraising can be simple, rewarding and FUN! As well as raising lots of money for a worthwhile cause, you'll meet some inspirational people and gain a real sense of pride.
The trick to successful fundraising is to choose a method which best suits you and your potential sponsors. Before you begin think about the following:
If you don't have much, focus your efforts on quick and simple ideas.
Do you have any hobbies or interests you could base your fundraising round?
Who do you know who might be able to support you. What's the best way to approach them?
If you've ever sponsored a friend or colleague, you already know a fundraising expert. Ask them what worked for them?
Remember: small amounts x lots of peole = MANY lives changed.
Did you know that a tube of Smarties holds £27 worth of £1 coins? Give your friends/colleagues a tube and challenge them to fill it - you'll be amazed at how well this works
Many companies now operate a matched-giving scheme where they match what you raise £ for £ (sometimes up to a certain limit).
Many pubs will hire out rooms for free on weekdays in return for you bringing people through their doors. Invite friends, family, colleagues, or anyone else and charge an entry fee.
Get rid of those unwanted Christmas presents at a car boot sale. Ask your friends to clear their's out too and donate their items to you.
Put a link to your online fundraising page on your Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or Youtube page.
Give up something for Macmillan: smoking, drinking, swearing, chocolate, the hairs on your legs... the possibilities are endless.
Ask your friends, family and colleagues to empty their pockets every evening for a week and donate the proceeds. You'll be surprised how quickly the money adds up.
Collections are a great way of generating lots of money in a short space of time, but are subject to legal guidelines. In addition we have to make sure that any collection doesn't conflict with existing fundraising activity. So, if you'd like hold a collection, you'll need to complete and return our collection box request form [PDF, 31kb]. Collections on private property only need authorisation from the owner of the property (pub landlord or supermarket manager, for example). However, collections in a public place, such as shopping mall or station car park require a public license which must be sought from the local council and consequently require a lot more planning. If you have any queries about collections please email eventsqueries@macmillan.org.uk.
Encourage friends, family and work colleagues to donate a £1 for a green Macmillan safety pin. You can order pins by downloading and completing a Fundraising Materials order form [PDF, 36kb].
